Don’t Go Back To Sleep
1992
Don’t Go Back To Sleep comes in these formats: CD, Digital Download, Digital Download Instrumental Tracks.
This is Jan’s first solo album. The title cut, inspired by the well-known Rumi poem and expanded with a Middle Eastern flavor, has become required listening in many Vision Quest circles. “Tenderly Calling” has been recorded by John Denver and by Hot Rize, one of the bluegrass world’s finest bands. It also appeared in a PBS Frontline documentary called “Country Boys,” a story of teenagers growing up in rural Kentucky.
Make It Real
Make It Real
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
In the beginning, all you’ve got is the dream
All you’ve got is a feeling that wants to be free
But how does it happen, how does it come to be?
What is the secret, and where is the key?
You’ve got the vision, but how do you make a start?
You’ve got to listen close, and follow your heart.
You’ve got to make it real
You’ve got to make it happen
There ain’t nobody else gonna make your dreams come true
Just let the love shine through
Do what you really feel
You’ve got to want it, you’ve got to make it real.
Now, sometimes you get discouraged
You’ve been working night and day
And you know that if you push too hard you might drive your dreams away
The truth is, it’s mostly magic
But you’ve got to do your part
You’ve got to listen close, and follow your heart.
You’ve got to make it real
You’ve got to make it happen
There ain’t nobody else gonna make your dreams come true
Just let the love shine through
Do what you really feel
You’ve got to want it, you’ve got to make it real.

One Step at a Time
One Step at a Time
Words and Music by Jan Garrett
I know a secret garden, all filled with the promise of spring
Magical visions are starting, with blossoms and birds on the wind
All of my life I’ve been searching for something this lovely to find
Now, I’d take you there, but I’m feeling too scared
So let’s take it one step at a time.
I’ve got a garden inside me with roes just beginning to bloom
Up until now I’ve been hiding, all locked up alone in my room
All of my life I’ve been hoping for someone like you to come through
But I’m scared and I’m blind, so if you don’t mind
Let’s take it one step at a time.
How do I know I can trust you
And are you as real as you seem
Come close and just let me touch you
I’m afraid you might still be a dream
So could we be friends forever, and will there be secrets to share
Do we belong together, and how do I know that you care?
All of my life I’ve been waiting for something like this to come true
So let’s see how we feel, we’ll know if it’s real
If we take it one step at a time.

Weaving A Web
Weaving A Web
Words and music by Jan Garrett
Weaving a web, a silvery thread
Watch what you’ve woven, take care what you’ve said
It could be a lie or some poison you’ve spread
Deception’s a dangerous game.
Your web is your living, you catch what you can
A working girl’s got to get by
But don’t get so smart you forget who you are
Or you might end up like the fly
Weaving a web, watch where you tread
Cheerful detachment will keep you well fed
You’ve got to be honest and clear in your head
Deception’s a dangerous game.
You use what you’re given to do what you do
Be sure your intentions are clean
If you get too wrapped up in clever designs
You’ll find yourself trapped in your dream
Weaving a web, the fly is misled
Be careful you don’t get yourself caught instead
Beware of insidious plans in your head
Deception’s a dangerous game.
So don’t be deceiving yourself as you spin
Give credit where credit is due
Remember the masterful weaver of all
For the magical gifts coming through
Weaving a web, a silvery thread
Spinning out beautiful dreams in your head
Keep it in focus and don’t be misled
Deception’s a dangerous game
Deception’s a dangerous game.

The Dark Side
The Dark Side
Words by Jan Garrett Music by Jan Garrett & Jerry Fletcher
Here comes the dark side
Here comes the can’t hide
Here comes the nothin’ left to do
Here comes the bad year
Here comes the worst fear
Here comes the “Baby, where are you?”
When we don’t got no money, honey
How we gonna lighten our load?
How we gonna get by, are we just gonna sit by the road?
Here comes the bad dream
Here comes the sad scene
Here comes the boogie man inside
Here comes the trash man
Here comes the last stand
Here comes the no place left to hide
We’ve got to face the music, Baby
Looks as through there’s nothin’ left to do
So we might as well be ourselves, see ourselves comin’ on through
Here comes the dark side

Winter Dreams
Winter Dreams
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
I wake up, looking around my room
All my dreams crystal and clear
Icy rainbows, brilliant winter time of year
I believe there is a place for me
I don’t know how to get there
But I hear love songs calling on the frosty air
All my hopes are frozen at this place in time
Feeling like I’ve only just begun
But I remember every detail etched upon my dreams
Gleaming in the sun
Someday soon someone will come for me
I will be ready to go
All my memories falling like the silent snow.

Blessed Be
Blessed Be
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
I sing of a new beginning
The lonely night has passed
La la la la la la la, A Renaissance at last
The grateful heart is singing
This lovely month of May
La la la la la la la, Her gentle Rondelay
And Blessed Be the emerald green
The heart of shade and the lilac queen
Blessed Be the lovers and friends
Awakening everywhere
And long live the blessed earth
The Renaissance and the glad rebirth
Blessed Be the tenderness in the air
I know not how it came, this sing that knows my name
La la la, this song it knows my name
What Alchemy or Art has opened up my heart?
La la la, it’s opened up my heart
(Come follow follow follow, follow follow follow me
Whither shall I follow, follow follow, Whither shall I follow follow thee?
To the Greenwood, to the Greenwood, to the Greenwood Greenwood Tree)

Out To Sea
Out To Sea
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
I kept waiting for you to come to the dock where my boat was tied
I thought you’d like to come on board, and we could take a ride
Day after day and night after night the moon would come and go
The quiet waters lapping on the shore.
And in the dawn the salty song of seabirds in the air
The breezes from far-off Mombasa blowing through my hair
And deep inside, a quiet voice says, “Go on out to sea…”
It says, “Go on out to see what you can see.”
Seasons come and seasons go, and no one comes for me
The only love that’s real is blowing in from the open sea
And all the unspoken promises, and all the hopes that might have been
Are fading in the brightening air like a half-forgotten dream.
And every beating of my heart says, “Go on out to sea.”
It says, “go on out to see what you can see.”
And the far-off pounding of the waves says, “Go on out to sea.
Go on out to see what you can see.”
I step aboard my slender boat, and we cast off with ease
The silken sails they shine and billow in the morning breeze
We set our course courageously straight into the rising sun
And I smile to think how easily the journey has begun.
Farewell my friends and family, I’m going out to sea
I’m going out to see what I can see
Goodbye to all that’s gone before, I’m going out to sea
I’m going out to see what I can see.

The Dancer
The Dancer
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
There’s a woman on the terrace, dancing in her bare feet
Singing to the air sweet songs of “Oh, what a lovely night….
Everything’s feelin’ all right.”
She’s dancing in the moonlight, singing to the June night,
Thinking that she soon might find herself in love again
Knowing she’s her own best friend.
Nobody’s there to see the dancer
She’s moving to the rhythm deep inside of her soul
And nobody cares to know the answer
But her silent heart is wise
And it’s looking out through her eyes and it’s singing
La da da da, do you wanna dance?
There’s a dancer doin’ all right, singing in the sunlight
Thinking that he just might find his way back home again
Knowing he’s his own best friend.
He’s moving through the breezes, doing what he pleases,
Following the easy sound of the simple samba beat
Sizzling in the tropical heat.
Nobody’s there to see the dancer
He’s moving to the rhythm deep inside of his soul
And nobody cares to know the answer
But his silent heart is wise
And it’s looking out through his eyes, and it’s singing
La da da da, do you wanna dance?
There’s a couple on the terrace, dancing in their bare feet
Singing to the air sweet songs of “Oh, what a lovely night…..
Everything’s feeling all right.”
Do you wanna dance, woncha take a chance
Can’t you feel the rhythm of the music moving down in your feet
Singing to the samba beat.
Nobody’s there to see the dancers
They’re moving to the rhythm deep inside of their souls
And nobody cares to know the answers
But their silent heart is wise
And it’s looking out through their eyes, and it’s singing
La da da da, do you wanna dance?

Don't Go Back to Sleep
Don’t Go Back To Sleep
Words & Music by Jan Garrett
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you
The market only wants to buy and sell you
Listen to the sound underneath the ground
Deep inside your dreams the heart is beating
Don’t go back to sleep
You know that you must ask for your treasure
Move, therefore, toward the greatest pleasure
Fight to stay awake
Choose the path you take
Even if you don’t know where it’s going
Trust your own unknowing
Don’t go back to sleep
It’s so easy to be there with your long perfumed hair
And the footstepon the stair in the cool of the evening
No one sees me as I draw back the veil on a wave of creation
The physical sensation of another world….
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you
The market only wants to buy and sell you
Fight to stay awake
Choose the path you take
Even if you don’t know where it’s going
Trust your own unknowing
Don’t go back to sleep

Tenderly Calling
Tenderly Calling
Words and Music by Jan Garrett
Home, come on home
Ye who are weary come home
Softly and tenderly calling
Home, come on home
Sometimes when I’m feeling lonesome, and no one on earth seems to care
I’m all by myself in the darkness, with no one and nothing to share
Just when it feels like it’s hopeless, and I’ll never make it alone
I hear the voices of angels, tenderly calling me home
I try to hold it together, and I never let on that I’m scared
But still sometimes I fall to pieces, scattered and lost everywhere
Just when it feels like there’s no one to mend all my broken-down dreams
I hear a voice deep inside me, tenderly calling to me
So don’t be afraid of the darkness, and don’t run away from the storm
Stand up and face your reflection, the feelings you’ve tried to ignore
‘Cause after the tempest is over, and you’ve let yourself come on through
You’ll hear a voice in the silence, tenderly calling to you
