Great Grandfather’s Piano

Written by Matt Zeller & JD Martin ©2025

I was a warrior in Afghanistan

My family’s ninth generation

I took the fight to the Taliban

In the name of our great nation

How I hate how we left that place

So many lies we were told

Years of regret on my face

Scars worn with pride on my soul

And tonight I’m alone

Let the music take me home

I lean in close and I close my eyes

And smell the ancient wood

I feel his fingers touching mine

And we play something good

Now in this sacred dark

Deep within our hearts….we are

Playing great grandfather’s piano

I swore that no one would be left behind

And I guess I did my best

But there’s a ledger always in my mind

And it won’t let me rest

Tonight I’m alone

Let the music take me home

I lean in close and I close my eyes

And smell the ancient wood

I feel his fingers touching mine

And we play something good

Now in this sacred dark

Deep within our hearts….we are

Playing great grandfather’s piano

Somehow in the stars

We meet as kindred hearts….we are

Playing great grandfather’s piano
