Holy Mother

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

She comes in with a gypsy midwife
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
Singing her way thru the sorrows of this life
She shall have music wherever she goes
Music wherever she goes

Dancing along in the madness
She’s got her feet on the ground
Give her your pain and your sadness
She’ll eat you and turn you around
She’ll turn your whole world upside down

Holy Mother.....Holy Mother of God
Saving the sisters and brothers
Holy Mother.....Holy Mother of God

She is the heart of the darkness
She is the port in the storm
Hers is the fierce love that holds us together
The fire that keeps us warm
The fire that keeps us warm

She is the wind in the canyon
She is the rain on the land
She knows the stars and the seasons by heart
You live in the palm of her hand
You live in the palm of her hand

Solftly and tenderly calling
Blessing the living, and holding the dead
When everything else has fallen away
She is the voice in your head
She is the voice in your head

The Stillness of Your Heart

Words & music by Jan Garrett

Listen closely, my dear
There's a love song playing in here
In the sweetness of the dark
You can feel it in your heart

It's as close as can be
If you listen closely you'll see
In the deepest part, you can feel it in your heart

And you know you don't have to be afraid
'Cause you're never alone as it seems
Deep down inside, you can confide in your dreams

You have music to play
Every breath of the way
What a thrill you are, in the stillness of your heart

And you know that the song will never end
It's like nothing you thought it would be
Follow the sound silently under and all around

When this breath is enough
Whole new worlds open up
You're a brilliant shining star, in the stillness of your heart

Listen closely, my dear
There's a love song playing in here
And it's always something new
In the deepest part, in the stillness of your heart.

Beautiful Dreamers

Words & music by Jan Garrett

Beautiful Dreamers, all madder than hatters
Dutiful Schemers, all safe and sound
Same beginning, the world keeps spinning around
What has been lost, and what have we found

Brave pioneers, tears, and cowardly villains
All eyes and ears, we're all flesh and bone
Loving, parting.....starting off alone
Bound for a new world, we're coming home

Beautiful dreams and far-reaching visions
Bless the collisions with our lucky star
Hope springs eternal, and that's who we are
Traveling so long and so far.....

Beautiful Dreamers, all madder than hatters
Dutiful Schemers, all safe and sound
Same beginning, the world keeps spinning around
What has been lost, and what have we found

My Grandmother's House

Words & music by Jan Garrett

My Grandmother's house had apple trees with lilacs by the door
And a cool dark porch with a wooden swing & a root cellar under the floor
My Grandmother's house was quiet and smelled of rhubarb pie
And there was always a pleasant word for the neighbors passing by

My Grandmother's house had lace curtains with sunlight dappling through
And a lazy breeze in the cottonwood trees, and a mourning dove or two
My Grandmother's house was spacious, and safe & warm & whole
And every detail is etched upon my soul.

But now gone are her kindly hands and the colors of her day
And the hopes, the dreams, & the apple trees have long since passed away
But to me it's more than a memory, it's living inside of me still
And the seeds so faithfully planted will flower again on some future hill.

My Grandmother's house had apple trees with lilacs by the door
And a cool dark porch with a wooden swing & a root cellar under the floor
My Grandmother's house was quiet and smelled of rhubarb pie
And there was always a pleasant word for the neighbors passing by

More Than He Could Say

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

We were always kind of scared of him, he was strong & handsome
And he made it clear who wore the pants in the family
Everybody tried to please him, we fought for his attention
Then we would shine like twinkling stars
Don't you wonder who we are
But he was just too far away to see
Our captain sailed us sternly through the storm
He kept us safe, if maybe not so warm
His silence might have kept his kids at bay
But I think he loved us more than he could say

He wasn't much of a talker, so Mom would have to tell us
How proud he was of each of us, and how he really cared
He was busy taking care of things, and we were busy leaving
Now all the king's horses from way back when
Can't quite put us together again
But heaven knows we do the best we can
Now, every empire has its rise and fall
In time the harshest tyrants fade away
He never said "I love you" that I recall
But after all, it was more than he could say

I drove down for the weekend, he was glad to see me
He said, "Your Mom, you know, is kinda slow, it's hard to get around
But we appreciate your coming, we know you keep so busy
We hope the girls are doing fine
Tell them to come by some time
We'd love to see you all next time around
Well, every empire has its rise and fall
In time the harshest borders fade away
I never said, "I love you" that I recall
But after all is said and done....
I love you more than I can say.

Wide Open

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

Before you came to us, the dreams would roll through us
The more to un-do us, and open our hearts
But for all that we tried it, our hopes were so quiet
Our silence denied it, and it kept us apart
And it kept us from dancing and singing our song
And it kept us from making a start
We were praying and hoping the silence would be broken
For the dreams, still unspoken, stayed locked in our heart.

First a ripple, then a rumor, then a subtle sense of humor
For we never expected that you'd come along
But the silence was broken, you broke it wide open
the silence was broken and filled with your song.
And it was filled with your laughter, and filled with your light
And you blessed us as we moved along
For the silence was broken, you broke it wide open
The silence was broken and filled with your song.

So, we all made a promise, we thought that we could honestly
Keep our love sheltered and safe and confined
But the promise was broken, you broke it wide open
the promise was broken when you left us behind.
but you left us your dancing, and you left us your song
Now won't you bless us as we fall apart
For the promise was broken, you broke it wide open
The promise is broken now, and so is our heart.

And now that you've parted, we've gathered open-hearted
and we know that you're happy and singing your song
So won't you help us remember that we might as well surrender
this love is so tender, and our love is so strong
And it'll keep us all dancing and singing our song
And it'll bless us as we move along
For our dear hearts are broken, you broke us wide open
We're empty and open, and we're singing our song
We're empty and open now.....and singing our song.

No Lyrics

Saturday

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

After the crucifixion, whaddya gonna do
Nothing to resist or fight for, the unthinkable came true
After the betrayal, living through the lies
No clemency for the faithful, but we survived
Now we already know the story, so the mind can leap ahead
Resplendent Sunday morning, the resurrection of the dead
But we’re not there yet, Baby, so how do we make our way
Through Saturday, Saturday
And nobody tells you how to make it through
And so goodbye Good Friday, lemme see what love can do.

I have no patience for waiting, and I’m scared of what’s in store
Funny how nobody mentions the other side of the door
Jesus says “Stick with me, Baby, I’ve spent some time here too
And I’d show myself some mercy if I were you...”
I told him, “I got no investment, so just show me what to do.”
He said, “Start by doing nothing, cause you got nothing left to lose
Keep your heart wide open, and just enjoy your stay
It’s Saturday, Saturday.”
And hey, this is easy, so why not take our time
We’ll wake up Easter morning, and we’ll find our hearts entwined.

So let us have compassion, and give ourselves some slack
It’s clear that we’re forgiven, there’s no reason to look back
The past is far behind us, the future is on its way
It’s Saturday
And I can just see us.....We’re riding on the wind
We’ll wake up tomorrow morning and we’ll let ourselves begin.

Feel Like I Wanna Go Home

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

Springtime floating on the morning breeze
Bees busy visiting the apple trees
The whole world is bursting with a natural ease
Why do I feel so alone?
Lilacs blooming in the noonday sun
The cool breath of evening when the day is done
The world is a wonderful place when you're young
But I feel like I wanna go home

I should be content to be here where I belong
Just being myself and singing my song
But I can't shake the feeling that something's wrong
I just don't know what it could be

These are the best times that I've ever had
It's crazy to be feeling so alone and so sad
I'm too young to have the blues so bad
There's something I need to be shown
‘Cause I feel like I wanna go home

To everything there is a season
Things happen at the perfect time
Deep down inside there's a reason
And that's what my heart wants to find

A new light is dawning at the break of day
There's a wonderful sweetness in the new-mown hay
A secret is stirring in the breeze today
There's something I need to be shown
I feel like I wanna go home
I just can't do it on my own.....'Cause I feel like I wanna go home

Let Her Go

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

She's just as pretty as a picture, glowing thru the years
Light and shadow, all woven together
She sends you her love forever, and a song to bless your soul
Singing in her bright spirit, you can feel it, hear it

Let her go.....let her dance.....Let her run through the willows in the wind
Let her sing.....and take her chances
Let her fancy free her soul
Let her go.....let her fly.....Let her throw back her head with laughter
Let her by, don't try to follow after.....Let her go

She was the sun and the moon in the garden of your heart
The lifeline you could always come home to
And now it's her turn to venture into new worlds of her own
So let your whole life caress her, let heaven bless her

Let her go.....let her dance.....Let her run through the willows in the wind
Let her sing.....and take her chances
Let her fancy free her soul
Let her go.....let her fly.....Let her throw back her head with laughter
Let her by, don't try to follow after.....Let her go

Caught in a body of circumstance, this day is too small for her soul
She'll slip out into the silence of a starry night,Barefoot all the way home

Let her go, let her fly.........say goodbye..........Let her go

Out of the Silence

Words & Music by Jan Garrett

Out of the silence, into the night
Out of the darkness into the light
Where there was nothing, something comes to be
Take a breath and see the possibility

Out of the morning, soft as a summer breeze
Out of the struggle into a life of ease
There in the quiet, the turning of the tide
Out of the darkness into the light

Out of the silence into the sound
Millions of voices singing all around
Have we the courage to simply let it be
And listen carefully to hear the harmony

Over the rainbow and under the sun
Everything's blooming, the new day has begun
Here's the beginning, we've known it all along
Out of the silence into the song
